About Hope Haven
OUR MISSION: Hope Haven Inc., a foundation of recovery, provides life skills for chemically dependent adults and families within a supportive residential environment leading to independence.
Founded in 1976, by Arietta Black and Alice Trotter, two heroic women whose path to recovery from alcohol and drugs intertwined with passion turned their vision into reality. Concerned with the lack of residential services available for alcoholic women in early recovery, they walked door-to-door collecting signatures of support for residential women’s services, and then asked Lance, Inc. for a seed grant. With those funds Hope Haven leased its first home, and opened its doors to house five women. Since its earliest days, Hope Haven has responded to the needs of the community.
Today, Hope Haven is still dedicated to helping people in recovery rebuild their lives by providing them with the support services needed to achieve healthy recovery and economic independence.
All programs, with the exceptions of a men’s permanent housing facility in Dilworth, a women’s permanent housing facility in University City and a men’s transitional housing facility in Concord, have now been consolidated into a substance-free recovery campus on North Tryon Street in Charlotte. The Villages of Hope Haven, formerly the Villager Inn Motel, consists of 11.6 acres, which includes a 17,500 square foot conference center, 206 housing units, administrative space, chapel, commercial greenhouse, an on-site commercial laundry, a commercial kitchen and dining area, and meeting rooms. Once a thriving hotel and conference center, the property in the early 90’s fell prey to drug dealers and criminal activity. Within the year prior to Hope Haven’s arrival, local police reported over 600 calls to the Villager Inn site. Today, Hope Haven’s strong community presence has effectively changed all that! The agency is committed not only to providing quality comprehensive services to its residents, but also to partnering in the revitalization and empowerment of the community.
Hope Haven’s innovative model of residential services allows for outreach to an increased number of homeless and at-risk individuals and families; and has grown to an average of more than 300 adults per year. The Villages of Hope Haven makes it possible to respond to a critical shortage of aftercare facilities, particularly those serving substance abusing individuals and their families. All Hope Haven residents participate in regular group, family, and individual counseling, Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous and Cocaine Anonymous meetings, parenting and recovery workshops, vocational and educational assessments, and job training programs. The agency recognizes the importance of family to an individual’s successful recovery and transition to self-sufficiency; so Hope Haven allows for the reunification of children with their parents earlier in the recovery process.
Given the increasing number of families served by The Villages, more children are becoming a part of the Hope Haven community. Quality, accessible childcare and early childhood education are critical elements to the future independence of the family and its children. Hope Haven’s staff works tirelessly to help residents identify appropriate and affordable childcare for their children. In addition to the quality, comprehensive early intervention and educational services provided to our children, those from other programs and the surrounding community, Hope Haven collaborates with other agencies to expand existing parenting workshops and provide additional workshops on health, childcare, and early intervention. One of the main goals of the families program is to break the cycle of addiction by intervening during the most critical and formative years of a child’s life.
The support by private donations is integral to helping Hope Haven realize the full dream for The Villages. As our programs grow, so does the need for additional equipment, furnishings, and supplies for daily living. Private funding allows Hope Haven to open its doors to more homeless families and to provide expanded services, better equipping them with the tools needed for recovery and self-sufficiency. It would be an honor for Hope Haven to partner with you, in our efforts to rebuild lives and communities and to empower homeless families and children.
